Our History

Dres Lodge Retirement has its origins dating all the way back to the 1820s where it began as a hotel. The town of Sutherland, Ontario, originally known as “Jone’s Corner”, was named after the family-owned establishment located in the heart of the town.

In 1866 on the North West corner of the intersection, the second phase in history “Jone’s Corner” began. The once log cabin was replaced by a new framed hotel that constituted the change Sunderland was undertaking at the time.

In 1899, this new framed hotel was consumed by a fire that changed the face of the historic building. In 1910, the last phase was a three-story Victorian-style structure that was built by Dr. McDermott.

The remaining of “Jone’s Corner” into Sunderland in 1868 occurred after the creation of a new railroad passing through the town connecting Sunderland to nearby towns and with a small population of one hundred, maintained a vibrant business community, where at its heart, the now Victoria Manor stands. Today, the once-proud hotel has continued its history of providing excellent service by becoming the Victoria Manor Retirement Residence. Dre’s Lodge provides an old-fashioned atmosphere with all the amenities of modern life.
